What are volume lash extensions?

Volume lash extensions are fans of several very fine extensions, with one fan attached to each natural lash. Because every natural lash carries a fan, your lash line looks denser, fluffier and darker than with hybrid, which mixes single extensions with light fans. Volume fans commonly hold 2 to 6 extensions (often written 2D to 6D), though fan sizes vary by lash tech.

What are Russian volume lashes?

"Russian volume" is a name many lash techs use for volume made with handmade fans. Names vary between lash techs and studios, so if a name is new to you, ask what it means.

Are volume lashes right for you?

Volume lashes are a good fit if you want fullness across your whole lash line, with a soft, fluffy finish.

Volume may suit you if you:

  • want a denser, fluffier lash line than hybrid gives
  • like a bold, dark look
  • want a full, soft finish that's less dramatic than mega volume

You might prefer another option if you:

  • want a fuller look than your natural lashes, without the bold, dark look of volume: try hybrid lash extensions
  • want a very dramatic, voluminous set: try mega volume lash extensions
  • want a classic set, with one extension on each natural lash: we don't offer classic sets, and hybrid is the closest option we have

If you've had a reaction or sensitivity to lash extensions before, book a patch test first.

What to expect at your volume lash appointment

A volume appointment at our studio takes around 1 hour, and 1.5 hours at most, for a full set or a refill. Here's how your visit works:

  1. Patch test first, if you need one. If you've had a reaction or sensitivity to lash extensions before, book a $20 patch test ahead of your full set. It takes about 15 minutes, and the FAQ below explains how it works.
  2. Before your visit. When you book, we send our eyelash extension consent form, which every client completes before their appointment. We also message you before every appointment to confirm the date and time.
  3. Removal, if you're wearing another technician's lashes. Book a $20 removal with your full set.
  4. Choose your style. Tell us the look you'd like from the styles listed below.
  5. Relax with your eyes closed. You lie back on a lash bed, with a hydrogel eye pad covering your lower lashes, while the fans are applied to your natural lashes.
  6. Open your eyes once the fumes are cleared. At the end, we use a small handheld fan to clear the glue fumes before you open your eyes.

If your eyes itch, hurt, swell or look red after a set, or your vision changes, don't try to remove the extensions yourself. See an eye doctor promptly. For an allergic reaction, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) advises seeing an ophthalmologist immediately.

Styles you can choose with volume lashes

Volume is the type of set, and the style is its shape. Alessia Simonetta, our owner and master lash artist, does natural, open eye (doll eye), cat eye, fox eye, wispy, wet look and strip lash styles at our Woodbridge studio. Most styles commonly work with any type of set, including volume.

Here's what these styles commonly look like:

  • Natural: follows your own lash line and gets softly longer toward the outer third.
  • Open eye (doll eye): puts the longest lashes in the centre of the eye, above the pupil, for a rounder, more open look. See doll eye lash extensions.
  • Cat eye: gets gradually longer toward the outer corner, where the longest lashes sit, for a lifted, elongated look. See cat eye lash extensions.
  • Fox eye: steps up from the centre and keeps the longest lengths across the outer part of the eye, commonly with a lifting curl, for a lifted outer corner. See fox eye lashes.
  • Wispy: adds longer spikes every few millimetres over a softer base, for a textured, fluttery look. See wispy lash extensions.
  • Wet look: commonly made with closed, spiky fans for a dark, defined finish, like lashes fresh out of the water. The name describes the look, not water. At our studio, wet sets fall into the volume category, so they're priced as a volume set. See wet set lashes.
  • Strip lash: a look modelled on a strip of false lashes.

To see how lash techs plan lengths for each style, read our lash map guide.

Aftercare and refills

Alessia recommends washing your lashes ideally every day with an oil-free cleanser. Our Lash Cleanser Kit pairs an oil-free foam cleanser with a brush, and it removes dirt and makeup without breaking down the adhesive bond. For washing, water and sleep, see our lash extension aftercare guide.

To keep your set full, book a refill while at least 40% of your extensions remain. Our guide to how long lash extensions last explains refill timing and the lash growth cycle.

Volume lash extensions FAQ

How much do volume lashes cost in Woodbridge?

At Luxury Lash Lounge in Woodbridge, Vaughan, a volume full set is $135 and a volume refill is $70. At least 40% of your extensions must remain for the visit to count as a refill; otherwise, it's charged as a full set. Lash extension removal and patch tests are $20 each.

How long does a volume lash set last?

Lash extensions, including volume, fall off as your natural lashes shed, as the American Academy of Ophthalmology notes, so a set thins out over time. To keep it full, book a refill while at least 40% of your extensions remain. Our guide, how long do lash extensions last, covers the lash growth cycle and refill timing.

How is volume different from hybrid and mega volume?

Hybrid mixes classic single extensions with light fans, for a fuller look than natural lashes without the bold, dark look of volume. Volume puts a fan on each natural lash for a denser, fluffier lash line. Mega volume commonly uses bigger fans of finer extensions for a very dramatic set; we use 0.03 mm lashes for its big fans.

Our types of lash extensions guide compares them side by side.

Are volume lashes damaging to your natural lashes?

Volume lashes, like all lash extensions, carry some risks. The American Academy of Ophthalmology lists them as injury to or infection of the eyelid or cornea, allergic reaction to the glue, and temporary or permanent lash loss. It also warns that rubbing, tugging or pulling can fracture your natural lashes.

So avoid rubbing or pulling at your set, and have it removed professionally. Our guide, do lash extensions ruin your lashes?, explains more.

Do I need a patch test before volume lashes?

We recommend one if you've had a reaction or sensitivity to lash extensions before. It costs $20 and takes about 15 minutes: we place 5 to 10 short, natural lash extensions on each eye with our glue, plus the hydrogel eye pad we use in all our lash treatments.

If you notice itching, stinging, burning or swelling within 24 hours, let us know, because it may mean you have a sensitivity or allergy. See our lash glue allergy guide.

How do I book volume lashes in Vaughan?

Text or call 647-533-7202, send a DM to @luxurylashlounge on Instagram, email luxurylashloungevaughan@gmail.com, or send a request with the form below. Our private, appointment-only studio is at 118 Pioneer Ln, Woodbridge, ON L4L 2J1, in the City of Vaughan. We need at least 24 hours' notice to cancel an appointment.

Can I wear mascara with volume lash extensions?

You can, because lash extensions are semi-permanent, but Alessia highly recommends against it. In her experience, mascara and eyeliner contain oils that break down the adhesive bond and will most likely make your extensions shed prematurely. A volume set already gives you a denser, fluffier lash line.

Will you remove lash extensions from another studio?

Yes. Outside removals are welcome, and a lash extension removal is $20. Professional removal is the safest way to take off eyelash extensions without damaging your natural lashes, so please don't pull them off yourself.

We don't refill another lash technician's work. If you book a full set while wearing another technician's lashes, you must book a removal with it.
